Introduction
Our story begins with two ambitious MBA students at the College of Charleston in 2021. Tony Vu and Jota Low found themselves drawn together by their shared experiences as children of immigrant families. Despite their different origins, they quickly recognized the common threads in their upbringings and the challenges they faced navigating life in a new country.
As we delved deeper into our conversations, we discovered that our immigrant backgrounds had profoundly shaped our understanding of healthcare disparities. We both had witnessed family members struggle to access appropriate care due to language barriers, cultural misunderstandings, and unfamiliarity with the complex U.S. healthcare system. These experiences left an indelible mark on us, fueling our desire to create change.
Academic Pursuits Shaping Our Vision
Our academic pursuits further equipped us with the tools to address these challenges. Jota’s determination while attending medical school, coupled with his MBA studies, provided invaluable insights into both the clinical and business aspects of healthcare. Meanwhile, Tony’s MBA and a Master’s in Computer & Information Technology from UPenn offered a unique perspective on how technology could be leveraged to solve healthcare accessibility issues.
This combination of personal experience and academic knowledge led us to a crucial realization: cultural competency in healthcare is not just a nice-to-have; it’s a necessity. We understood that effective healthcare isn’t just about medical expertise – it’s about understanding the patient’s background, beliefs, and unique needs. This realization became the cornerstone of our platform’s development.
Our Platform: A Solution Born from Experience
Our platform addresses common issues faced by immigrants and other marginalized groups in accessing healthcare. We’ve incorporated features that allow patients to specify their cultural preferences, language needs, and even the gender of their healthcare provider. By matching patients with providers who understand their specific cultural context, we’re working to eliminate the fear and mistrust that often prevents individuals from seeking care.
Moreover, we’ve streamlined the referral process, a aspect of healthcare that can be particularly daunting for those unfamiliar with the system. Our closed-loop referral system ensures that patients are connected with providers who not only meet their medical needs but also align with their cultural and personal preferences.
We’ve also integrated telehealth capabilities, recognizing that physical access to healthcare facilities can be a significant barrier for many immigrant and marginalized communities. By providing remote consultation options, we’re bringing quality care directly into homes, breaking down geographical and transportation barriers.
Our Commitment to Equity
Throughout the development process, we’ve constantly drawn upon our own experiences and those of our communities. We’ve asked ourselves questions like: “Would this feature have helped my parents navigate their healthcare journey?” or “How would this tool have impacted the health outcomes in our immigrant communities?”
By centering these perspectives in our work, we’re creating a platform that doesn’t just pay lip service to diversity and inclusion – it’s built from the ground up with these principles in mind. Our goal is to create a healthcare ecosystem where everyone, regardless of their background, can access care that is not only medically sound but also culturally appropriate and personally comfortable.
Conclusion
As we continue to grow and evolve our platform, we remain committed to our core mission: leveling the playing field in healthcare access. We believe that by addressing the unique needs of immigrant and marginalized communities, we’re not just serving these groups – we’re elevating the standard of care for everyone. After all, a healthcare system that works for the most vulnerable among us is a healthcare system that works for all.
